Identification and Quantification of Short Chain Fatty Acids (SCFA)

About the service

SCFAs are produced by the gut microbiota during the fermentation of partially and nondigestible polysaccharides. The highest levels of SCFAs are found in the proximal colon. The most common types are butyrate, propionate, and acetate.

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) play an important role in the maintenance of health and the development of disease. Interestingly, these compounds provide around 10% of our daily energy.

SCFAs are critical for gut health, metabolic balance, immune regulation, brain function, and overall disease prevention.  SCFA testing can provide insights into digestive health, microbiome balance, and potential disease risks.
