Challenge 1: Individual Animal Identification for India’s Livestock

Every cattle and buffalo owner in India deserves an identification system that stays with the animal for life. Today’s ear tags get lost, damaged, or removed, and traceability breaks down during transport, sale, or death. We are looking for a non-invasive, tamper-proof solution, such as muzzle, facial, or iris recognition, that identifies animals with at least 99.5% accuracy from an early age, works for both cattle and buffaloes, and records breed composition, including mixed breeds. It must also support secure digital records of ownership, vaccination, health, and movement that connect to national government platforms. It must be affordable and easy to use in the field, scalable to India’s ~500 million cattle and buffaloes, and it should enable milk traceability up to pooling and individual-level meat traceability. Proposals must have a working prototype or preliminary validation data. Ear tags combined only with a mobile app will not be considered.
