Social Innovation Immersion Program

Outline of the Fellowship Program 2015

  1. Recruitment & Selection of Social Innovator Fellows (Upto 6 weeks)
  2. Pre-Immersion orientation & induction: (Upto 4 weeks)
  3. Immersion Programme (Upto 24 Weeks)
  4. Post Immersion Filtration (Upto 12 weeks)
  5. Product Design, Prototyping and Delivery Mechanism (Upto 36 weeks)
  1. Recruitment & Selection of Social Innovator Fellows (Upto 6 weeks)

    • Four "BIRAC Social Innovators" (fellows) will be selected through an interview.
    • Eligibility Critera:
      • Educational qualification undergraduate (BSc, BTech, BE, MBBS) or postgraduate degree (MSc, MPH, MS, MTech, MPhil, MD & PhD) from fields such as life sciences, biomedical engineering, design (including product design), medicine & human biology.
      • Candidate should have drive to understand the milieu of healthcare in different resource settings, work in teams and drive independent projects and has excellent communication skills.
    • Fellows need to work fulltime
    • Fellowship cannot be combined with fellowships from other funding organisations.
  2. Pre-Immersion orientation & induction: (Upto 4 weeks)

    • Briefing by SIIP partners about objectives and outcomes of the programme
    • Training on processes of -
      • 'ethnography' studies
      • systematic clinical and community observations,
      • needs assessment and refinement,
      • affordable technology development and commercialization,
      • market and industry research and
      • enabling rural / remote settings.
  3. Immersion Programme (Upto 24 Weeks)

    • Exposure to Clinical and Rural community settings
    • Periodic reviews of fellows
    • Mentoring on Intellectual property and technology commercialization issues
    • Generation of a written report from each fellow about the experience and summary of the Ideas generated, to be submitted to BIRAC.
  4. Post Immersion Filtration (Upto 12 weeks)

    • Generate a document on the 2-3 final ideas shortlisted, prepare the detailed requirements for the next stage.
    • Submit to BIRAC a detailed plan of action for taking an identified gap/need to the next stage either in terms of product design or delivery component with at least two milestone stages.
  5. Product Design, Prototyping and Delivery Mechanism (Upto 36 weeks)

    • Fellows will be provided the live prototype development environment or planning a delivery implementation.
