Frequently Asked Questions
How is a N95 Mask different that cloth masks?
N95 masks have to ensure that more than 95% of the particulates of 0.3 microns size are filtered out successfully when the mask is tested as a whole (and not just as a fabric). Cloth masks do not give this level of filtration efficiency.
How is a N95 Mask as compared to surgical masks?
Surgical masks do not offer filtration of more than 95% of the particulates of 0.3 microns size. They also do not offer a leak-proof fit.
Who should be using a N95 mask?
N95 masks should be used by anybody who is entering a zone where the risk of infection is very high. This includes:
- Hospitals
- Testing labs
- Caregivers
- Emergency services
- Housekeeping staff
- Anybody forced to be in the vicinity of potentially infected persons especially in closed environments
Does a mask need anti-viral properties?
Masks need to filter out aerosols (tiny airborne droplets), which are known to be the primary mode of transmission of the virus. That is the primary purpose of the mask. If that purpose is not met, additional properties are of little use. The value of anti-viral coatings on masks is not very clear as yet especially in the context of the fact that SARS-CoV2 is usually transmitted in tiny droplets (and not as a free-floating virus).
Are MH12 Masks BIS Certified?
No. MH12 N95 Masks are not as yet BIS Certified. Application is in progress and certification will take time since BIS has a queue of more than 100 applications that are waiting for grant of license as of 6 July 2020.
Please note that a BIS Certification is not necessary to make available or sell a mask unless the buyer states that as a requirement. However, a producer cannot fraudulently use the Standard/ ISIS Mark without a license from BIS.
What does BIS Certification mean?
BIS Certification allows the producers to claim that their product is “BIS Certified”. The company is granted a license to use the Standard/ISI Mark as per IS9473:2002. In order to allow the license, BIS requires certain standards of manufacturing, quality control, and testing.
