Mission Startups (Startup India Standup India)

Startup India Standup India

On 15 Aug 2015, the Prime Minister announced the “Start-Up India” initiative, which would encourage entrepreneurship among the youth of India.”Start-Up India, Stand-Up India,” the Prime Minister said. Venture Center supports the Startup India Mission:

  • Venture Center’s core purpose is itself to nucleate and nurture startups! Venture Center specializes in knowledge intensive and inventive startups.
  • Venture Center is India’s largest science business incubator. It is also India’s largest inventive enterprises incubator(As of 31 March 2015, Venture Center was home to 31 resident entities).
  • Venture Center is the first and only business incubator in the CSIR system (CSIR is India’s largest publicly funded R&D organization).
  • Venture Center is the pioneer in India with regards to the creation of spin-off entities from publicly funded research organizations(10 spin-off companies created from CSIR).
  • Venture Center is one of the very few incubators in India that focuses on and can support startups leveraging the chemical, materials and biological sciences and engineering.
  • Venture Center is focused on supporting the earliest stage entrepreneurs (90% of incubatees are at concept, proof of concept or prototype stage).
  • Most start-ups at Venture Center are founded by highly qualified founders (80% of incubatees have PhD/ MTech/ MBA degrees and advanced research experience from leading academic and research institutes around the world including IITs, IISc, US/UK universities etc)
  • Venture Center actively supports and promotes women managers and entrepreneurs (31% of incubatees are women; 80% of staff are women).

Mission Skills (Skill India; Kaushal Bharat, Kushal Bharat)

Venture Center supports the Skill India mission as follows:

  • Venture Center is actively engaged in training and skill development in domains such as entrepreneurship, innovation and scientific techniques. It primarily trains young people in entrepreneurship and innovation via one-to-one mentoring. It also organizes a large number of talks, training programs and workshops.
  • Key areas of training are:
    • Entrepreneurship and venture development
    • Intellectual property
    • Technology commercialization and innovation management
    • Sophisticated scientific and analytical techniques
    • Product design, development and translation
  • Venture Center is one of the most vibrant and active incubator environments in India (Venture Center ran 130+ events in FY 2014-15).
  • Venture Center’s incubatee companies such as Swayam Shikshan Prayog and Villagineer promote grass root entrepreneurship by women entrepreneurs and rural entrepreneurs respectively.

Mission MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises)

The Government of India has made the growth and expansion of micro, small and medium enterprises a priority. This is in the context of the immense contribution MSMEs make towards employment, GDP and exports. Concerned ministry: http://msme.gov.in/

Since inception, the Venture Center has actively supported the Government’s mission to support MSMEs.

  • Venture Center actively creates new startups. Most of these startups are micro -enterprises at inception. Venture Center focuses on a class of micro-enterprises that are developing inventive or knowledge-intensive products and services.
  • The Venture Center operates India’s most successful IP Facilitation Center (IPFACE) for the benefit of MSMEs and entrepreneurs. See www.ipface.org . The IPFACE is a facility open to all MSMEs and entrepreneurs/ innovators.

Mission Manufacturing in India (Make in India)

Make in India

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched the “Make in India” initiative on 25th September 2014 with the aim of promoting India as an important investment destination and a global hub for manufacturing, design and innovation. The ‘Make in India’ initiative does not target manufacturing sector alone, but also aims at promoting entrepreneurship in the country. 25 sectors have been identified under the “Make in India” initiative. Venture Center supports the Make in India mission by:

  • Nucleating and nurturing manufacturing companies. A majority of the Venture Center’s incubatees companies are developing products and will eventually be manufacturing companies.
  • Venture Center’s Soft Landing Program encourages foreign companies to explore and invest in India in general and Pune in particular as a destination for their R&D activities for their manufacturing activities.
  • Of the 25 sectors identified under the “Make in India” initiative, Venture Center’s incubatee companies are contributing to the following sectors: Aviation, Biotechnology, Chemicals, Defence Manufacturing, Electronic System Design and Manufacturing, Food Processing, Oil and Gas, Pharmaceuticals, Roads and Highways, Renewable Energy, Textiles and Wellness.

  • 70+% of Venture Center’s incubatees are working in the area of biotech/biomed products and services. They are developing new solutions in therapeutics, diagnostics, devices etc.
  • The Venture Center operates India’s largest (in terms of number of incubatees) Bioincubator supported by BIRAC (Dept of Biotechnology).

The Government of India has announced its keenness to pursue clean and renewable energy technologies for India’s growing energy needs. Government of India has also announced a National Mission for a Green India.

  • Venture Center is one of the few technology innovation ecosystem for entrepreneurs and innovators in India that can be benchmarked against global standards in terms of the richness and quality of the micro-ecosystem. Venture Center wishes to contribute to India’s rankings in the Global Innovation Index. Venture center wishes to build a unique innovation cluster in Pune for India.
  • NavStik, an incubatee company of Venture Center, is building the brains and operating systems for drones – the only company in India that has such sophisticated technology and one of a handful of global companies in this domain.

The Government of India’s Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has announced the Sugamy Bharat (Accessible India) mission while the Ministry of Rural Development supports technology interventions in Rural India.
